Democracy in Action:
Navarro ISD Candidate Forum and Civics Education

Candidate Forum

While the eyes of most voters are focused on statewide races, there are many hotly contested local races on the ballot in our area. Navarro ISD in Guadalupe County is one of those jurisdictions.  LWV Comal Area moderated a candidate forum for the Navarro school board candidates on October 14 at the local community center.

Five Navarro ISD candidates are on the ballot for four at large positions. The top four vote getters will win the at large positions.

Four Navarro ISD board of trustees candidates participated in a candidate forum in person. A fifth candidate unable to attend the forum in person sent a statement that was read during opening statements.  About 30 community members attended the forum.

.

The forum format allowed for opening and closing statements and questions selected by LWV Comal Area. Each candidate was given the opportunity to answer each question

The candidates were also given the opportunity to provide information for the LWV Comal Area Local Voter Guide and vote411.org. Vote411 allows the voter to put in their address and pull up the races on their ballot their ballot.  Early voting runs through Friday, October 30.  The last day to vote is Tuesday, November 3.

Angela Freeman of LWV Comal Area moderated the forum while member Sara Askey was the League's team leader.  The League would like to thank NISD's Communications Director Chelsea Ormond for her work in making the candidate forum a success.

Civics Education Presentations

Earlier this fall, League members, including Tania Rickett, Diana Hottle, and Sara Askey taught Navarro seniors about voting and voter registration. State law requires schools to provide two voter registration opportunities each school year. LWV Comal Area assists 11 schools across Guadalupe and Comal Counties.

Twenty-four students registered to vote during the Navarro event.  League members enjoyed meeting the Navarro students, teachers, and administrators.

The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan organization that encourages the informed and active participation in government. The LWV never supports or opposes candidates for office, or political parties.
