The Voter: October 2025

From the President

Highlights in this issue:
  • Early Voting and GOTV Activities: Early voting is in full swing and ends Friday on Halloween. We enjoyed seeing neighbors at our get out the vote tables at the libraries, high schools, and community events in September and October. We especially enjoy meeting the kids stopping by to vote in our Favorite Texas Bird runoff between the Hawk and the Owl.
  • We kicked off early voting season with an Early Voting Tailgate on Sunday, October 19 hosted by the fabulous Fran Hargrove. Attendees enjoyed great food and fellowship.
  • In this issue, we've included some pictures of the tailgate and GOTV event.
  • Groundwater Presentation Video and Materials: If you didn't make the Drought and Demand Groundwater event in September, the full video and slide decks are available in this month's article on the Drought and Demand Series. A shout out to our cohosts Comal Conservation and Tye Preston Memorial Library along with our panelists, who did a fantastic job.  It was a full house!
  • New Candidate Forum Moderator: This election marks Claire Morrison's debut as Candidate Forum moderator and producer.  Claire is LWCA's Election Information Director.  Claire follows our past president, Jerrie Champlin, who graciously mentored Claire in her new role.  Claire's debut videos of our Cibolo City Council and SCUCISD candidate forums, polling locations, and other helpful information are all linked on our 2025 Election Info Page.
Last day to vote is November 4. Have a great fall!

LWCA Tailgate Kicks Off
Early Voting Season

During October of each year in Texas, football season and early voting season coincide.  This year, LWCA held a tailgate to kick off of early voting season. LWCA's Fran Hargrove hosted the event.  Donned in their favorite team gear, members shared delectable tailgate food at Fran's lovely home. The event was part of an ongoing series of informal events designed to engage the membership and promote volunteering. Anne Gulick is LWCA's membership director.

 Guadalupe County GOTV and HSVR
This was a busy month for Guadalupe County area activities. Our stops included Schertz Public Library (pictured), Pecantown Books and Brews, and Seguin Public Library. We spoke with several registered voters, who appreciated receiving nonpartisan information on the 17 constitutional amendment proposals. Kids enjoyed voting in the mock election and getting the cool voting stickers.

In addition to the voter registration drive at Clemens High School featured last month, we provided materials to Steele High School for its high school voter registration program. One of the most sought-after voting stickers in our HSVR collection was designed by Steele graduate, Aubriella Kolar.

Questions were gathered from the audience and answered later.  Q & A April 22 Forum

As prolonged drought continued to affect Canyon Lake and area water supplies, a panel of experts discussed how agencies are responding to current and future water management challenges.

Panelists included:

• Brett Mazey, Lake Manager, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers
• Nathan Pence, Executive Manager of Environmental Sciences, Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority (GBRA)
• Aundrea Williams, President, Texas Water Company

Each shared insights into their organization’s role in maintaining and protecting Canyon Lake’s water resources.

2. Groundwater Management, September 24, 2025:

WATCH VIDEO
The second panel focused on groundwater, which provides an estimated 62% of Comal County’s water supply from the Edwards and Trinity Aquifers. Speakers explored how state and local entities are managing these vital resources amid ongoing drought and population growth.

Panelists included:

• Natalie Ballew, Groundwater Division Director, Texas Water Development Board

• Larry Hull, President, Board of Directors, Comal Trinity Groundwater Conservation District
Roland Ruiz, General Manager, Edwards Aquifer Authority

The discussion highlighted the roles and responsibilities of state and local agencies in conserving groundwater resources and protecting aquifers that serve as lifelines for the region.
