Drought and Demand: Canyon Lake Water Management
Canyon Lake has provided water, flood protection, electricity, and recreation to Comal County residents and visitors for more than 50 years. However, unprecedented drought conditions in recent years and a growing population in Central Texas have caused a strain on Canyon Lake, causing water levels to reach historically low levels in 2025. In response to these ongoing challenges,a panel hosted by LWV Comal Area, Comal Conservation and Tye Preston Memorial Public Library discussed the management of the lake's water resources on Tuesday, April 22. A recording of this discussion is now available for viewing on the LWV Comal Area's YouTube channel at https://youtu.be/PMkSb2Az31M?feature=shared. The panel includes Brett Mazey, Lake Manager for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Nathan Pence, Executive Manager of Environmental Sciences for Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority (GBRA), and Aundrea Williams, President of the Texas Water Company. Each spoke about their organization’s respective roles and strategies in addressing current water management issues. Written questions were collected from the audience.
