From the President

February 14 marks the 105th anniversary of the League of Women Voters US and March 11 will be the 32nd anniversary of the founding of our local Comal Area League. I recently spent some time looking through League archives housed at the Sophienberg Museum.  Did you know that the first Circle Arts Benefit Performance was Feb. 2, 1995, just 2 years after LWVCA was formed?  So much of what we can accomplish is impacted by the relationships we build with each other and with other community organizations. Every goal we reach is made possible by such a variety of contributions. When you buy a ticket for the benefit, volunteer at a GOTV table, help stuff packets for high school drives, deliver voter guides, bring a friend to a meeting or tell a neighbor about what our League does; you are contributing to our success.  Thank you!  On these anniversaries, I will be thinking about all who have made the League in our nation, in our state and here in Comal and Guadalupe Counties what it is today.

Women's History Month Event Scheduled March 11

Mammen Family Public Library's celebration of Women's History Month will include A History of the League of Women Voters in the Comal Area on March 11, 2025, which is also Comal Area's 32nd anniversary as a local League.   LWVCA President Jerrie Champlin will discuss League history and activities and how community members can participate from 10:30  - 11:30.a.m. Voter registration and information will also be available.  Registration for the event begins February 18 on the library website at MFPL Calendar- registration.

Voter Services Kicks Off 2025 at MLK Day

The LWV Comal Area Voter Services and Youth Empowerment teams kicked off the year at the MLK Day March and Ceremony hosted by our community partner, the New Braunfels MLK Association, on January 20.  Several members braved the wind chill to march and carry the LWV banner.

At the Ceremony, League member Toni Urban was honored with the MLK Association's Henry E. Ford Achievement Award given to recognize her outstanding community service with several organizations in our area.  Congratulations Toni!  YE team member Angela Freeman logged the first LWVCA voter registration of 2025 from a Canyon High School Senior whose aspiration is to a make difference in the world. And the first vote was cast in the LWVCA 2025 Texas Bird Mock Election for those under 18.  The mock election continues through June 15 to introduce those not yet old enough to register to the joy of voting.

Comal Area VDRS Are Ready to Register!

Thank you to Comal County Elections Coordinator Cynthia Jaqua for scheduling a special VDR training on Jan. 28 for League members. 19 members obtained or renewed their VDR certification and LWVCA now has over 20 members certified and ready to register voters.  Find out how you can become a VDR at Volunteer Deputy Registrars. Please note, you do not have to be a VDR to volunteer for the League. We have a variety of volunteer opportunities.  Contact Us  or go to the Volunteering website page for more information (members must be logged in to view volunteering opportunities).
