From the President

The arctic blast headed our way will not stop the MLK Day March and Rally Monday, January 20, and I hope to see many of you there. Whether or not you are able to march, please join us at the New Braunfels Convention Center for a joyful celebration and the presentation of the MLK Associations's Henry E. Ford Achievement Award recognizing outstanding community service to an individual who happens to be a League member!

I'm excited about what's planned in coming months. In addition to GOTV events, February includes another fun Circle Arts Theatre performance to benefit our League on the 1st; a presentation by Dr. Emily Briggs will highlight important maternal health care issues on the 19th and  LWVCA is sending 8 delegates to the LWV Texas Lobby Days in Austin to meet with our legislators and discuss the League's priority issues with them on the 25th.  Keep your eye on our website calendar to find activities and volunteer opportunities to fit your interests. The numbers from our efforts in 2024 are amazing (see below) and all made possible by your involvement!

-Jerrie Champlin

Enjoy a side splitting night of comedy to support the LWV Comal Area and local community theatre at Circle Arts.  Tickets are $25 and can be purchased from any LWVCA Board member, member Bonnie Leitch or the Circle Arts Theatre. Contact Us for more information.
Renowned New Braunfels Family Medicine physician Emily Briggs, MD, MPH, FAAFP will discuss critical healthcare issues and challenges posed by Texas laws and policies. Her presentation will emphasize the urgent need for changes needed to ensure comprehensive and safe healthcare for pregnant women and marginalized communities in our state.

New Membership Portal Goes Live Feb. 3

Beginning February 3, 2025, the League of Women Voters is changing the membership process and using ChapterSpot as the new League membership platform.  Going forward, most members will join and renew through a centralized online form that will be used for all Leagues across the country, although it will still be possible to join offline.

This form will be available from each League's website.  More information about what the new system will mean for you is available at New Membership System FAQ. You will receive an email asking you to log in to the ChapterSpot portal for the first time to confirm your membership.  Your membership renewal date will not change and your current membership will remain active until your renewal date. The purpose of the new system is to improve the member experience by making the joining and renewing process consistent across all Leagues.

Youth Registration Drives Coming Soon!

LWV Comal Area is gearing up for its spring student voter registration drives. Comal Independent School District drives are scheduled March 24-28 and we are working with other schools to schedule drives and presentations.

We will need member VDRs for the school drives but additional opportunities that do not require VDR certification include administrative help with registration packet document updating and organization in February, and a  registration packet stuffing partythe last week of February. Stay tuned for future volunteer solicitations from Youth Empowerment Director Sheila Pattison!
Learn More About County Governments

Comal and Guadalupe Counties are offering opportunities to learn more about county government starting in March. More information and registration for the University of County Government series offered by Comal County March 4 - May 6 is available at  UCG Comal. More information and registration for the Guadalupe County Citizens Election Academy March 4 and 6 is available at  Guadalupe Academy
Federal Judiciary Study Is Underway

At the LWVUS 2024 Convention, delegates voted to proceed with a study on the federal judiciary to be completed on a fast-track timeline for a position to be announced at the LWVUS 2025 Council in June 2025. The Federal Judiciary Study Committee will offer multiple opportunities for Leagues to ask questions about the study, hear about the committee’s work, and also learn about this issue.  Members can log in and find more information at League Mgmt-Judiciary Study.

2025 Mock Election Candidates Announced

LWVCA will ask under eighteen year olds to select their favorite Hill Country bird in the 2025 Texas Critter Mock Election.  The candidates on the ballot at LWVCA Get-Out-The-Vote tables from January - June are the hawk, owl and roadrunner.  Those not yet eligible to vote will be asked to draw or write their candidate choice on a ballot form and place it in a ballot box.  This will be the 4th mock election the league has used to introduce youngsters to the idea of voting.
